PRICING
• Unless you are familiar with the rental car market, it is useful to comparison shop to ensure you are getting a fair rate.
• If speaking with an agent, always remember to inquire on the availability of special programs or rates. If shopping online, look for exclusive Web deals.
• Make sure you are getting the TOTAL price estimate, meaning a quote that includes all the applicable taxes and fees. Consider renting a car off the airport to save some money on taxes and fees.
RESERVATIONS
• Car rental companies have a fixed number of cars in their fleet, so it's important to make sure a car is available.
• Book through a reputable company and get a confirmation number to take with you upon arrival at the counter.
CAR TYPES
• Every car rental company has a fleet with tiers ranging from low-end to high-end vehicles. Some companies offer specialty vehicles such as convertibles, luxury vehicles, Hummers and other sport utility vehicles for additional money.
• Generally, the smaller the car, the less expensive it is to rent. Car companies will try to get you to buy up, so select one that truly meets your needs.
• Airport car rental agencies are required to maintain their fleets with cars no more than two years old. If renting from an off-airport agency, ask about standards.
INSURANCE
• Know in advance whether or not your insurance covers you and your rental car.
• Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) are optional and often covered under your own auto insurance plan (although if you need to pay it, you will have the same deductible as you do on your own policy.)
• Credit cards may offer additional coverage, but very often it is a supplement to your own policy rather than a stand-alone policy. Call the 1-800 number on the back of your credit card for coverage details
• Personal belongings may be covered under your own plan or through homeowners insurance.
• Additional Liability Insurance (ALI) protects you from claims made by third parties but may be covered by your own policy.
• Understand your own auto insurance policy to avoid unnecessary coverage.
• However, if you don't have insurance, carefully select the components that suit you best. All insurance is voided if you're in violation of your rental contract.
OTHER FEES
• Rental car companies allow you to pre-purchase gasoline options. In most cases, it is most cost effective to skip the option and fill up at a local gas station before returning the car.
• Late fees are often assessed once a car has past beyond the allotted grace period. You will be charged hourly and then for a day. If you had a special weekend or weekday rate, returning your rental car after the agreed time can severely alter pricing.
• Drop-off charges apply when returning the rental car to a different location, so inquire about specific fees.
• Expect higher costs for renters under the age of 25, as well as renters requesting car seats.
FAMILY & SAFETY
• Not all rental cars have the same safety features, so ask for ones that are important to you.
• Reserve in advance if you need an infant, child or booster seat. Not all car companies have the same policies for kids.
DISABILITIES
• Make arrangements with your rental company in advance if you or your companion requires a car with disabilities features. Not all companies are equipped to handle your needs.
DIRECTIONS
• Most rental car companies should provide you with local maps. Always come prepared with the address and phone number of your final destination just in case.
• Use an online mapping service in advance if you are going someplace unfamiliar. Hertz is known for its NeverLost Global Positioning System. Other car companies have OnStar systems for directions or may be able to rent a cell phone for emergencies.
DOCUMENTATION
• Be sure all drivers can provide a current driver's license.
• If you are planning to use your own insurance, be prepared to supply a copy of the policy.
• Unless otherwise agreed, you will need a major credit card, as opposed to a debit card, to secure your rental car purchase. (A balance is usually held on your card until the end of your trip. Bear this in mind if you are running close to your credit limit.) |
